The article deals with the sources and reasons for appearance and wide usage of abbreviations in the Russian language, outlining disputable issues related to morphemic segmentation of abbreviations and defining their place in the system of means of derivation. The author singles out thematic groups of abbreviations, analyses their stylistic functions and usage in major functional styles of the language
