Adaptation strategies for foreign students (the case of Far Eastern federal university)

The article presents the key aspects of the development and implementation of adaptation strategies for foreign students of Far Eastern Federal University. The study was carried out using qualitative sociological methods. Unstructured interview was the main method of data collection. Field work was carried out in the spring of 2022. Our study has shown that the migration of foreign students brings to the social structure not only potential labour resources, but also unique educational and professional experience, plays the significant role in social, cultural and economic development of the host region, city, university. Successful adaptation of foreign students, which implies the choice of a specific adaptation strategy to new social and cultural conditions of the Russian university, is one of the key factors determining the effectiveness of the work of formal and informal university structures. The vast majority of foreign students show an integration strategy in various spheres of life. The adaptation strategies of educational migrants are determined by socio-cultural attitudes of students towards the host society. It is the peculiarities of the migrant's attitude to a new environment that clearly demonstrate the individual's perception of himself in a foreign cultural community and his subjective assessment.
