Te journal Protaton was one of two periodicals of the Holy Mountain at the beginning of the 21st century. This is the only modern independent journal not directly connected with any institution or monastery. The author of this article reconstructs the ideological and thematic content of the journal from 2001 to 2013, analyzes the use of media as an instrument of church mission by the editors as well as the communication strategies adopted in the publication in the context of traditional forms of monastic life and Christian literature. The period chosen by the author was marked by changes in the leadership of the journal, as well as the beginning of the economic crisis in Greece, which was the reason for changes in the journal’s editorial policy. In the course of the content analysis of Protaton issues in the 21st century, the author traces a certain evolution in the communicative strategy of the editorial board and a transition from a set of attitudes traditional to the monastic community toward tendencies characteristic of modern media. Until now, Greek-language editions of the Holy Mountain have not been the subject of serious research in Russian and world science.
