The article the main and actual problems of adaptive breeding of varieties of spring soft wheat in the middle Volga region are reflects. Criteria of adaptability of selected genotypes in the breeding process of the region are presented. The priority directions of research work and the tasks solved by the laboratory of breeding and seed production of spring wheat in terms of creating new varieties and breeding material that meet the modern requirements of science and production are shown. In recent years the Institute has created new varieties of spring soft wheat with high adaptive potential, which are able to withstand the most extreme conditions during the growing season: Kinelskaya 2010, Kinelskaya yubileynaya, Kinelskaya volna and promising lines Erythrospermum 4144, Erythrospermum 4146, Erythrospermum 4147. Varieties and lines are characterized by high plasticity and adaptability to the contrasting conditions of the region, high productivity (potential varieties of more than 5-6 t/ha), comprehensive resistance to pathogens and consistently high quality grain.
