Topical problems of the transformation of university education in Russia

This article inquires into some aspects of the innovative processes of modern institution of higher education, in particular, transition to a two-level system, reducing the number of universities, integration of colleges, etc. The author emphasizes the contradictory nature of these processes and their influence on the functioning of the university as a traditional element of European culture and central educational and social institution.
