The article deals with the problem of modal qualification of social progress in contemporary and classic philosophy of history. The paper shows that social progress in the classical historicism was understood as a necessity, and in modern philosophy of history - either as the reality or the possibility. It is concluded that understanding of social progress as possibility is the semantic invariant of the modern understanding of the progress of society.
