The paper considered the book «American notes» by Charles Dickens. The English writer has managed to bring to book his view of the country and journalism «by an outsider». In this case, Charles Dickens being a prominent Englishman has perceived «an America of his own». According to the outcomes of the study the author mentioned that Charles Dickens in the «American notes» expressed his opinion (which had not been concealed under the web of lies) about the American reality and about the American freedom of speech as such. The «Country of freedom» has appeared to be not attractive as it seemed to be. The real face of America did not look like an ideal that Charles Dickens pictured in his mind up to the papers and essays by the contemporary bourgeois publicists of that period.
