The article follows how perception of the USA by the Russian culture was manifested in the literature for children in late of the 19thс. It is shown how significant cultural tendencies of the epoch were refracted through the prism of children literature. The author considers works of such famous writers as Chekhov, Osorgin and texts of less studied writers such as Nemirovich-Danchenko, Kanevsky and others, whose works belong to «mass fiction». The main motive of young protagonists' leaving\escaping to America is investigated in the article. The author is focused on moral and psychological problems, which were actual for Russian literature of that period as well.
