The article is devoted to the analysis of historiographical problems of Northern Caucasus’s administrative-territorial system. It focuses on the issues related to this direction of research, specific features of the administrative-territorial arrangements and its reflection in scientific literature. The Soviet historiography has accumulated the experience of highlighting inter-ethnic relations of the peoples living in Russia and considering the theoretical aspects of the state policies in the field of national relations. Under the current conditions, researchers of Russia pay attention to the problems of the state-national formation, administrative-territorial structure of the peoples of Russia including the North Caucasus region, problems of interreligious and interfaith relations and their impact on the ethno-political processes. Science and political practices focus their attention on studying the ways of improving the federal relations and stabilizing interethnic relations.
