The article examines the characteristic compositional and semantic techniques of the genre scenes of painting of the Northern Renaissance, which had a significant impact on the development of the Dutch and Flemish branches of art of this period. The peculiarities of the new original genre are considered on the basis of comparing the structure of two iconic examples of paintings of this period - I. Beikelar “On the Market” and E. de Witte “The Market in the Port”. The logical result of the study is the identification of the approaches used by artists to achieve the task set by the customers - to reflect the daily life of people.
