Organizations of higher education, carrying out their activities on the basis of the fulfillment of the state task, provide services for the training of specialists in educational programs of higher and secondary education, and also carry out scientific activities. The problem of assessing the economic sustainability of educational institutions of higher education has now become particularly relevant. Economic sustainability is determined by the ability of the organization to carry out continuous and efficient activities, allowing to achieve the set long-term goals in a dynamically changing external environment. It is based on an assessment of the position of the organization in the strategic perspective and the dynamics of the external environment. The authors studied two approaches to assessing economic sustainability. The first approach is based on the assessment of financial stability by determining the difference between own and borrowed funds of an educational institution of higher education. The second approach is based on determining the break-even point. According to this approach, the economic situation of an educational organization of higher education is characterized by the ratio of the level of funds that are necessary for the implementation of educational activities and the actual level of its financing. The methodology for analyzing the economic sustainability of budgetary institutions of higher education provides for the study of its following areas: the dynamics and structure of assets and liabilities; efficient use of assets by types of financial support. For educational organizations, as structures of an entrepreneurial type, the main criteria for effective functioning are a sufficient increase in the part of income from income-generating activities in the general sources of funding; increase in income per scientific and pedagogical worker and the average salary of scientific and pedagogical workers in relation to the average salary in the economy of the region.
