Modern agricultural production is notable for a high level of mechanization of the processes. Thousands of machines are used for various purposes, devices and principles of operation, which makes them difficult to understand when studying and using. Row seeders are characterized by a variety of designs, working bodies, principles of operation, therefore, identifying the features and advantages of designs, principles of operation, as well as directions for the development of precision seeders is an urgent scientific issue. In the article it is presented the results of an analysis of the purpose, a brief design and technical characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of the widely used MS-8 row-crop seeders manufactured by JSC Millerovoselmash (Russia), MAGICSEM model 4100 manufactured by «MaterMacc» (Italy), TS-G-8 manufactured «Tekhnika-Service» CJSC (Russia), Maestro manufactured by «GASPARDA» (Italy), YP-625A manufactured by «Great Plains» (USA), EDX 6000-ТС manufactured by AMAZONE (Germany), Tempo F manufactured by VADERSTAD (Sweden). The following directions of deve-lopment of sowing machines have been identified: improving the quality of dosing seeds by reducing the height of seeds falling; improving the quality of seed metering due to the use of excess pressure in the metering devices of seeders; using airflow to transport seeds to the soil; centralization of fertilizer and seed bunkers; use of disc coulters; the use of polymeric materials; development of machine designs operating on stubble backgrounds. The analysis of the presented directions of development of sowing machines shows that they provide an increase in the quality of sowing seeds, increase the reliability and durability of sowing machines and their productivity. To increase the productivity of the sowing machines, high-speed working bodies (ove-rpressure devices, disc openers) are introduced into their design, providing sowing at speeds up to 15 km/h, and increasing the working width. Intensive development is also observed in the field of digitalization of seeding machines.
