The article analyzes data on pasture land use in Mongolian aimags bordering Russia. A distinctive feature of Mongolian society is the presence of arat herders, who lead a nomadic and semi-nomadic lifestyle and rely primarily on livestock. An analysis has revealed that pasture land predominates over other land use patterns in the land use structure with arable land predominating only in the Selenge, Bulgan, and Khentii aimags. Livestock population dynamics from 1990 to 2022 show that livestock numbers are increasing, despite unfavorable factors, such as the dzud. Extensive livestock farming (especially with the increasing goat population since the 1990s) negatively impacts natural ecosystems.
