Jokes as a means of shaping ethnic stereotypes (exemplified by British and Spanish cultures)

The article analyzes Spanish and British jokes about peripheral ethnicities living in Spain and Britain and in their former colonies, to show their role in shaping ethnic stereotypes. The analysis of the language material allows to identify common trends in stereotype formation and to make conclusions concerning similar strategies employed in constructing the ‘in-group” and “out-group” paradigms in these cultures.
