The article is devoted to the problems of the formation and development of the English shortstory genre of the XIX century. The author touches upon the questions of terminological definitions. The features of evolution of the English short fiction of the prominent Victorian writers are investigated. The synthetical nature of the nineteenth short-story genre is revealed.
