The review contemplates a new book by Prof. E.I. Annenkova Gogol and the Russian Society that answers many of the questions related to Gogol's creative biography (mainly, the latest period) and his relationships with the Russian thought of the middle of the 19 th century. It is noted that the investigation is actual because major attention is paid to correlation between the ideas of Gogol and the conservative thinkers whose role in the life of the Russian society has not still been paid enough attention in the Russian scholarly work.
