The Joint Russian-Kazakhstan expedition of IAET SB RAS and National Museum of Republic of Kazakhstan carried out the major archaeological survey in the East Kazakhstan area. The focal areas were Eastern side of Bukhtarma reservoir, Southern and Eastern sides of Zaisan Lake, Shilikty valley and North of Tarbagatai ridge. As a result, the expedition found more than ten new Paleolithic sites, including the unique for Kazakhstan territory open-air multilayer site of Ushbulak with Upper Paleolithic industries. The most ancient artificial complex was investigated at the Kurchum and Rysak-2 occurrences (Lower-Upper Paleolithic). Expedition found a few sites with surface artificial assemblages, which chronologically related to the broad range from Middle Paleolithic to Early Holocene industries without pottery.
