The article is a publication of the autobiography of the Russian psychiatrist M.O. Gertsberg. The autobiography is in the personal fund of the scientist in the Archives of Russian Academy of sciences. He was born in Odessa in 1892, graduated from a real school (1908), studied at the Medical Faculty of the University of Munich and received a doctor's degree from Yuriev University (1915). М.О. Gertsberg switched from the White Guards to the Red Army during the Civil War. After moving from Odessa to Moscow, the scientist worked in the Association of Moscow Sanatoriums, the Institute of Neuropsychiatric Prevention, in a number of psychiatric hospital in the capital, he was a senior researcher at the Psychiatric Clinic of the All-Union Institute of Experimental Medicine (1935-1941). He worked in evacuation hospitals, at the Department of Psychiatry of the II Moscow Medical Institute during the Great Patriotic War. The scientist defended his doctoral dissertation «Syndromes of disturbed consciousness in traumatic brain injuries» at the Institute of Psychiatry of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1949). M.O. Gertsberg died on November 3, 1968.
