The general cultural and historical characteristics of Sukhona river basin in the period of developed Neolithic era are given. The obtained results on the sequence and development of local tribes' settlements on the Sukhona territory during the period of developed Neolithic age are based on the analysis of contemporary sources. In the second half of the Vth - the beginning of the IVth millennium BC the upper Sukhona River was included into the zone of Lyalovo tribes' settlement. The tribes developed as a result of integrative processes of multicultural (comb and Lyalovo) traditions. The tribe members became the carriers of the pit-comb ceramics of “northern types”. In the first half of the IVth millennium BC this population reclaimed the whole Sukhona territory. In the middle of the IVth millennium BC the territories of the upper and partially of the middle Sukhona were inhabited by the tribes of Kargopol culture. The headwaters of Sukhona river, as a contact zone, were occupied by different cultural groups. The middle and the lower territories of Sukhona were characterized by the short stays of Neolithic population. At the end of the period the upper Sukhona was characterized by the south and south-western vectors of tribes' settlement (the Upper Volga region). The eastern and south-eastern vectors of settlement dominated on the territory of low Sukhona (Middle Volga, the Ural region).
