The theme of insanity being one of the leading themes in poetics of 1920-1930-ies of the XXth century initiates a great interest of the scientists in the phenomenon of insanity. The theme of insanity runs through all the works of M.A. Bulgakov and often has symbolical-romantic connotation. M.A. Bulgakov uses the phenomenon of insanity to reflect the state of the society at the time of dissolution of morals. The insanity of Bulgakov’s characters is selfdefence from the insanity of the real life surrounding them and an attempt to live an alternative life in their mind. Fear is one of the sides of insanity. Internal contradictions, conflict state of reality, inability to survive the things going on around lead to insanity, but often Bulgakov’s insane characters are more normal than other people surrounding them.
