Background. Researchers from different fields of science are constantly developing and improving the methods for measuring cumulative antioxidant activity (CAOA) of inhibitors of free radical reactions (antioxidants) found in various biological fluids (including blood, urine, saliva, tear, sweat, cerebrospinal fluid, tear, etc.), tissue homogenates, and suspensions of membranes and lipoproteins. Objective: to develop a non-invasive method for the assessment of the antioxidant status of the organism by measuring CAOA of urine using potentiometric coulometry on the example of an implantation material ‘Litar’ approved for use in medical practice. Materials and methods. ‘Litar’ is a mixture of a biopolymer (collagen or calcium sodium alginate) and calcium hydroxyapatite. To evaluate CAOA of urine, we used potentiometric coulometry with electrogenerated bromine radicals and an automated, certified, serial coulonometric device ‘Expert-006-antioxidants’ (Ekoniks-Expert, Moscow) according to a certified technique. Results. The study included two men (67 and 75 years of age) and one women (25 years of age) who received 0.5 g of LitAr twice a day. We observed effects of synergism (increase in CAOA) and antagonism (decrease in CAOA) of the relative parameters of evening urine compared to the control specimens of morning urine. For the first time we observed the effects of synergism and antagonism of relative parameters of morning and evening urine samples oxidized by the 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. Conclusion. The analysis of research articles evaluating the impact of various factors controlled by changes in CAOA and total antioxidant capacity (ТАС) of urine on the human organism demonstrated that these markers can be useful in assessing the antioxidant status of the body and its changes associated with diet, diseases, and some pathological and environmental conditions.
