The subject of the article is the theoretical discussion in the British press of the last third of the XIX century on the problems of the development of South Africa. The author attempts to compare the British industrial and Boers agricultural models of development of this region and different principles of relations with African tribes. These fundamental contradictions between British businessmen and Boer farmers became the main cause of the Anglo Boer war of 1899 1902.
