The paper discusses the aspects of the civil society development in the modern world. Although there are many approaches to studying civil society, extensive research has not been carried out on this issue in the media context. The author assumes that the identification of values provided by the civil institutions in virtual space, their correlation with the basic needs of the personality help deal with citizens in real and virtual spaces. The study reveals that social needs are relevant for the sample respondents. They are largely met in religious and ethnic communities in Vkontakte social network. Television satisfies these needs to a lesser extent. It has been empirically confirmed that the civil society institutions influencing a person in the virtual space include religious and ethnic communities, non-profit organizations, and the media.
