The study discussed the history of China in the 1920s covering the intensive power struggle among different groups. The research examined the actions of Chiang Kai-shek and Zhang Zuolin who made their political choice in the period under review and fought for power in China which was a matter of controversy among political fractions inside and outside the country. The author assumed that if Zhang Zuolin won this battle, China would be politically and economically dependent on the USA and Japan. Notwithstanding the ambiguous opinions of both contemporaries and researchers on Chiang Kai-shek’s personality and activity, his victory encouraged China’s development.
