The experience of building an education system in the Yakutsk region in the second half of the XIX - early XX centuries is presented in the article. It is indicated that during the post-reform period, attention to the problems of education at the level of private and public initiative increased, but on the outskirts of the empire, in particular in the Yakutsk region, it remained under state control. Moreover, it cannot be argued that private and public initiatives in organizing public education in Yakutia did not exist at all. Based on archival documents and previously published materials, an attempt was made to show the role of private and public initiative in the establishment and development of the pre-revolutionary education system in the Yakutsk Territory. Great attention is paid to guardianship - one of the main forms of public participation in the field of education. It is concluded that thanks to private and public initiative, financial support from patrons and the local population in the late XIX - early XX centuries. in the Yakutsk region, the formation and development of the education system began.
