Chat Tatars: practices of preserving historical memory and ethno-local identity

The characterization of the practices of preserving and updating the historical memory and historical and cultural heritage of the ethnolocal community of the Chat Tatars compactly living in the village of Yurt-Ora in the Kolyvan District of the Novosibirsk Province is provided. The source base of the research is the field materials of2024 including deposits and events of the Ethnographic Museum Complex "Chatsky Tatar Manor", as well as narratives recorded at the interregional festival "Siberian Sabantuy-2024" organized by the Novosibirsk Regional Tatar Cultural Center and the Regional Tatar National Cultural Autonomy of the Novosibirsk region. The subject of the study was the activities of the religious local Muslim organization "Iman " and the public organization "Preservation of the Chat Tatar Heritage." The joint efforts of these two organizations with the support of regional and all-Tatar national centers are aimed at preserving and presenting the traditions and culture of the local community. The ways of contributing of the museum and educational activities to the maintenance of the historical memory and self-awareness of the Chat Tatars, which has a multi-level character combining confessional and ethnic components including common Tatar, Siberian Tatar and ethno-local identity. The common cause of the Yurt-Ora village residents became the development of history and the expansion of the collective memory space. Archival research is conducted on the following topics: emergence of the Chat Tatars on the banks of the Ob River, the history of the Yurt-Ora village from the moment of its foundation, the religious community formation, and the participation of local residents in the Great Patriotic War. In general, the community ofthe Chat Tatars of the village ofYurt-Ora is stable, preserves historical memory, reproduces its religious and cultural traditions, and successfully presents itself both at the regional and federal levels.
