The article establishes typological parallels between N.Chernyshevsky's «What Is to Be Done» (1863) and William Godwin's «Caleb Williams» (1794). Comparative analysis is focused on the specifics of the genre, imagery, narrative strategies and style of both novels. The comparison is based on historical, biographical and literary facts.
