This work is an economic and theoretical study of the essence of digital (virtual) “money” of the central bank and the fundamental economic consequences of their issuance. These aspects constitute the subject of the study. The purpose of the work is to establish the essence of digital (virtual) “money” of the issuing (central) bank and the theoretically possible impact of their issuance on the functioning of the central bank itself and on the monetary type of organization of production and consumption. The paper provides a comparative description of money (coins and banknotes) and “digital money” of the central bank. Their essential differences are revealed. Based on these differences, it is concluded that the digital “money” of the central bank is not money. They are a virtual rationing tool, similar to coupons (cards). The consequences of the issue of these rationing funds are determined both for the central bank as a monetary issuer and for the monetary sector.
