The study looked at the public education activities of the Yakutsk region governors in the second half of the 19th - early 20th centuries. The research discussed the responsibilities of authorities and the powers of governors in the field of education. Based on the archives and published materials, the author described the contribution of the governors to the promotion of literacy and education in Yakutsk region. Notwithstanding many challenges and the lack of public initiative and support in the first instance reflected in the reports of governors, they were able to establish new public schools and secondary educational institutions in Yakutia. Thus, the first Yakut teachers’ seminary was opened in 1914, which made it possible to train teaching staff in the territory.
