The role of the Hoy Synod in organizing pastoral care of Russian prisoners of war during World War I

In this article, the author explores the organization by the Holy Synod of pastoral care during World War One among Russian prisoners of war in Austria-Hungary and Germany. The author offers examples, including packages sent by the church to POW camps through charitable organizations and support of captive clergymen with religious literature and liturgical items. The author draws particular attention to the Synod’s attempts to organize the deployment to POW camps of volunteer clergymen from Russia.
