Until recently, mass protests and demonstrations in Iran were strongly influenced by the large number and proportion of youth within the population. However, after a sharp decline in the birth rate, the demographic factor ceased to play an important role in political destabilization, and socio-economic and cultural-religious factors came to the fore. Iran currently has a low birth rate and a fairly low death rate, although it has risen sharply during the pandemic. If the observed trends in protest activity continue in the future, prolonged civil unrest could occur, which could cause the birth rate decline to accelerate and the death rate to decline to a halt.
