In the conditions of the socio-economic crisis, the development of new research on economic demography, including quantitative analysis and assessment of the influence of the demographic factor on the development of the main economic parameters of regional systems, is of particular relevance. The article examines the extent of the influence of the demographic factor on the effectiveness of regional systems for the production of gross regional product and on their domestic consumer market in a crisis on the example of the subjects of the Volga Federal District. The assessment of the dynamics of the influence of the demographic factor on the regional systems of the Volga Federal District was carried out on the basis of the following indicators: a) the total number, the number of urban and rural population, the level of urbanization, the balance of migration of the population; b) the average per capita real income of the population, the volume of retail trade turnover in comparable prices; c) the volume of the gross regional product of the subjects in comparable prices. The deterioration of the demographic situation narrows the internal and external consumer markets of goods/services and restricts the development of regional systems in most subjects of the Volga Federal District. The subjects of the district are characterized by a decrease in the absolute population, an increasing negative balance of population migration, stagnation of urbanization processes, high hidden unemployment of the working-age population, a drop in per capita income of the population, retail trade turnover and low growth rates of the gross regional product.
