In most polyneuropathies, nerve fibers of all sizes are involved in the pathological process, but in some cases, the lesion is limited mainly to either large or small fibers. The main indications for the detection of antiganglioside antibodies are Guillain-Barré syndrome, GM1 is found in patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome in -30% of cases. The titer correlates with disease activity. In the acute phase, the titer increases to maximum values and decreases during the course of the disease. Antibodies to disialoganglioside GD1b IgG have been reported rarely in patients with sensory neuropathy.
