The article considers the technique of car engine diagnostics as per GOST 23435-79. The analysis is carried out according to key parameters: brake horsepower, oil pressure, specific fuel consumption and carbon monoxide content in exhaust gases. The intensity of engine initial running is estimated by measuring acceleration when the throttle is suddenly opened. Visual inspection of the colour of the exhaust gases allows to estimate the composition of the working mixture and the presence of oil burning. Functional testing of the fuel system of a diesel engine helps to identify irregularities and component wear leading to reduced power, increased toxic emissions and fuel consumption. The use of GOST 23435-79 standard allows carrying out an objective analysis of the engine's health, which contributes to early failure detection.
