The article analyzes the key issues that the philosophy of life and existential philosophy consider, where the central concepts are instability and tragedy of life, insecurity and vulnerability of a person, loneliness, a sense of fear, increased social alienation. We emphasize dialogue and mutual influence of the philosophy of life and A. Schweitzer’s philosophy in existentialism. According to the main provisions of the philosophy of existentialism and A. Schweitzer’s philosophy, a person by refusing to accept the sufferings of living beings faces an abstract humanism. In contrast to this humanism, A. Schweitzer’s ethical principle of reverence for life should elevate a person to other creatures. His activity is characterized by understanding of the uselessness of abstract humanism in the face of the challenges of modern society. The way out of this crisis is possible only by awakening of person’s individual responsibility.
