Beginning with the times of Ivan the Terrible, Russia began to acquire more and more new territories, which, in the vast majority of cases and unlike other metropolitan countries, became part of the Russian state space. Quite quickly (by historical standards), the largest state in the world was created, in which many large and small peoples (nationalities, ethnic groups) began to live together, radically different in their way of life, culture, socio-economic potential, etc., which, in fact, constituted, and continues to constitute, the uniqueness of Russian society. At the same time, in addition to these fundamental features, in different periods of Russian history, other features dominated, which also determined the identity of the Russian state (for example, in Russia of the Soviet state, such values as collectivism, the exclusion of private property on land, etc. were formed, which rejected many values of the previous Russian Empire). The article examines the main trends in the change of identification features at different historical stages of Russian history. This issue is especially relevant due to the fact that after the collapse of the USSR, a situation of uncertainty of the identity of Russian society developed, and this situation has already dragged on for a long time.
