The dynamics of patriotism and the ideas about it in public opinion of modern Russia

The paper reveals the dynamics of patriotism concept that is constructed with the help of government and the ideas about patriotism in post-Soviet Russia. The author analyzes the findings of researchers investigating Russian patriotism, the official documents of the public authorities, and the results of sociological surveys. A significant part of Russian society focuses on re-establishing a typical national patriotism because of low awareness of civic patriotism. The traditional patriotism is deeply militarized; one of its main ideas is the military sacrifice as a duty of a citizen. The civic and national patriotism has the low ability to coexist. At the same time, such coexistence is possible in terms of state neutrality in relation to these two concepts of patriotism. It is concluded that the strategy for the regeneration of patriotism in its traditional forms is unsustainable.
