In connection with the significant burden of mental disorders it is important to determining the extent of their spread. The study aim is to identify and correlate key epidemiological indicators of mental health with data obtained in the sociological survey of the level of distribution of some borderline psycho-emotional disorders in the region. The author’s research is based on the following methods and tools: theoretical analysis of literary sources; study, comparative analysis and generalization of information; system analysis; statistical methods; monitoring, sociological survey, and questionnaire survey. The paper presents a generalized analysis of foreign and domestic research in the field of assessing the economic burden of mental disorders and suicides. It discloses key trends of suicidal activity, morbidity and prevalence rate of mental disorders, and disability due to these diseases among adults and children in modern Russia. Evaluation of statistical data is supplemented by results of the sociological monitoring conducted by the Federal State Budgetary Institution of Science “Vologda Research Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences” since 2002, devoted to the spread of signs of anxiety, depression and neurotic disorders in the Vologda Oblast. The conclusion is made about the discrepancy between statistical and sociological data on the extent of mental disorders. It is necessary to develop an integrated interdisciplinary approach to the early detection, diagnosis and treatment of anxiety and depression and suicidal ideation, especially among patients of the general somatic network. Special attention should be given to working with parasuicides. The study results can be used by regional executive authorities as a scientific basis for elaboration and implementation of programs to strengthen and protect population’s mental health in order to preserve labor potential of the region, improve quality of life of the mentally ill and their families and, as a consequence, minimize economic damage to society.
