Dynamics of the reproduction of intellectuals in the PRC

The article deals with the problem of the reproduction of the Chinese intelligentsia since the formation of the People's Republic of China. The institute of higher education and studentship are the main sources of reproduction. We have analyzed the changes in the social structure, functions and sources of the reproduction of intellectuals. The article considers role of the intelligentsia in the transformation of Chinese society over the past thirty years. Unlike the Russian transformation, Chinese modernization is more consistent and less radical in the political sphere. The place and role of the intelligentsia in the modern world are becoming more significant compared to previous periods. At the beginning of the 21st century with the economic, political and social changes in society the role of the Chinese intelligentsia began to rise, nowadays it is related to the future development of China. The intelligentsia has become a more active social group that influences the course, content and pace of reforms. It is established that the sources of reproduction underwent significant changes compared with the period before the "cultural revolution".
