Due to the technology import ban, there are two sources for the latest technologies in Russia: the defense industry and innovative SMEs. The article discusses the possibilities and effects of attracting innovative SMEs in the process of diversifying the defense industry. It is shown, that integrating these two sectors will speed up diversification, import substitution, and the development of technologies.
