After the defeat of the Russian army at 8-10 July 1711, Moldavian prince D. Cаntеmir drove into Russia. The adaptation of the Moldavian emigrants at the new place proceeded difficultly. Cantemir never abandoned his hope to release Moldavia from a Turkish burden. Taking into account the inability of Russia to wage a new war on Balkans (because of the ongoing Northern War), Cаntеmir had shifted his hopes onto Habsburgs. In 1715 he asked the Austrian resident in Petersburg О. Player to accept him in Austrian citizenship and to help him in forthcoming war with turks.
