The article analyzes national spiritual and moral values in the context of Russian university education. The question of how social attitudes change, aggravated by the geopolitical crisis and sociocultural disintegration after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and how they influence the formation of the axiology of a modern domestic university is explored. Attention is paid to the need to form spiritual and moral values among students, which are a determining factor in the development of social consciousness of citizens of modern Russia. The author relies on a cultural approach in studying the rationale for reforming Russia’s educational policy, turning to the idea of the dialectical development of culture as a way of universal understanding of the spiritual uniqueness of the nation. A comprehensive approach to the analysis of the historical and cultural heritage of Russia is proposed, determined by the principles of a dialectical understanding of the phenomena of national identity and its implementation in the country’s educational policy.
