The author studies the academic activity of Dzhuchi M. Tugan-Baranovsky, defines the sphere of his academic interests, gives the characteristic of his major works. The special attention is paid to the analysis of the works devoted to the formation of the political regime of Napoleon Bonaparte and identifying the endowment made by the historian in studying the history of French studies in Russia. D. M. Tugan-Baranovsky attached great importance to the period of the Consulate, stressing the prevalence of the Napoleon’s regime at that time. In this period the real opposition, both from the side of the royalists and Republicans was eliminated. Based on an extensive range of sources the historian analyzed various attempts of drafting a Republican conspiracy against Napoleon. The historian explored major transformations of the period of the Consulate: the reorganization of the financial system, judicial reform, establishment of the new administrative system and its subsequent evolution. He noted that the complex reforms of Napoleon were not only the political but also of great social importance. D.M. Tugan-Baranovsky claimed that Napoleon’s regime had much more connection with the inner end of the bourgeois revolution than it appeared in the Soviet literature. In recent years D.M. Tugan-Baranovsky has addressed issues of social and economic history of Russia in the late 19th - early 20th centuries and the study of political and scientific activities of his grandfather M.I. Tugan- Baranovsky. The author of the article shows what aspects of the work of the scientist-economist have attracted the attention of D.M. Tugan-Baranovsky.
