The article analyzes trustworthy Siberian newspaper’s «The Eastern Review» point of view when covering the events of Japanese-Chinese war of 1894-1895. Problems in getting true information in wartime did not prevent the periodical from reflecting the position of all the sides involved. Describing events, the newspaper assumed that dynamic developing Japan would be the future ally of Russia, stagnant, frozen China being strictly opposed. The periodical was not aware of the fact that after the war Russian ruling circles’ stance radically changed. Having arranged the «demarche of three powers» and thus forcing Japan to refuse from Liaodong Peninsula, which was supposed to belong to it according to the terms of the peace treaty, Russia had got a new enemy. Joining the fight of western powers for the spheres of influence in China, Russia elaborated the strategy of peaceful invasion, which happened to be the core of Russian-Chinese relations for some years.
