The article reviews the book by Larisa V. Pavlova and Leonid G. Kayanidi, literary scholars from Smolensk, which is dedicated to floristic symbolism. This book is the part of series devoted to the thematic groups Gems and Animals, and it is the next step on the way to the poetic thesaurus of Vyacheslav Ivanov poetry. This review emphasizes both the uniqueness and efficiency of the lexicographic description method of symbols developed by the authors (analysis of the frequency of a specific symbol, analysis of images and motives surrounding the symbol, introduction of a symbol into a minimal context, presentation of results in the form of tables), and its disadvantages when considering each of the symbols individually. Special attention is paid to the rose symbol, the most frequent and most significant for Ivanov poetry (in the book this symbol has not a special chapter, but at least two paragraphs are related to its interpretation). Also attention is paid to the practical importance of the book for Ivanov’s poetry studies, especially statistical and description data in the book appendices is important. A special place is given to the separation interrelated symbols and the differentiation of the symbolic/non-symbolic images, because it is basic issue in the building of the symbols thesaurus and the most difficult in the case of Ivanov. The review also emphasizes the relevance of the book by Larisa V Pavlova and Leonid G. Kayanidi in the context of contemporary studies of Vyacheslav Ivanov poetics.
