Gender dimorphism is typical of the immune and organ responses to shock, trauma, acute cerebral injury, and sepsis. The results of experimental studies suggest feasibility of adjuvant estrogen therapy in the treatment of acute cerebral injury, trauma, and sepsis. Protective effects of estrogen on the function of damaged organs are mediated by genomic mechanisms with the involvement of intracellular receptors ER-α and ER-β.
