Feminism in Russia: special path or mainstream

Бесплатный доступ

The article explores the historical development of the Russian women's/feminist movement and compares it to the movement in the West. The movement began with the introduction of the women's question in the 1830s and evolved into a feminist movement that achieved significant legal victories, including equal voting rights for women by 1917. However, the feminist movement in the USSR was suppressed by the Soviet ideology, which deemed it irrelevant to the class struggle. After the collapse of the USSR and a change in ideology in the late 1980s reignited the push for true equality and a reevaluation of women's roles in society. Since the early 1990s, there has been a resurgence of feminist ideas and practices, similar to the third wave of feminism in the West. The author notes that despite cultural and historical differences, there is a common thread among feminists worldwide: the unjust structure of society towards women. Overall, the article provides a comprehensive overview of the Russian feminist movement and its place in history.
