The article focuses on the figure of an outstanding Buryat public and religious figure of the late XIXth - early XXth century Agvan Dorzhiev (1853-1938). The author examines not only Dorzhiev’s life and work, but also the metamorphoses of historical memory of him and attitudes towards his ideas both in Buryatia and throughout Russia.
