The article analyzes the fundamental philosophical approaches to solving the problem of human destiny and the meaning of his life. We have considered the epistemological, ethical and axiological aspects of the foundations of happiness as a purpose in life; the correlation of happiness and pleasure, their relative nature and subjectivity in conjunction with social factors; the interrelation of the meaning-of-life problem with the perception of suffering and death. Comprehension of the meaning of life is based on intentionality, it is becoming a teaching about the purpose of life and the purpose of an individual, which are revealed through the category of happiness/pleasure. Self-transcendence is an essential characteristic in understanding the meaning of life. Much attention is paid to the basic ancient traditions of understanding the meaning of life in the Russian religious philosophy of the turn of 20th century, such as the rationale for the meaning of life, actualization of eude-monism and hedonism, relativity of happiness and suffering, and their determination by the concept of convicting conscience, understanding the meaning of life as a path to God.
