The article describes in general the regional studies of K.F. Fuchs, A.A. Fuchs, A.A. Keller, K.S. Ryabinsky, I.O. Deryuzhina, S.M. Mikhailov, I.J. Molyarov, M.N. Grebnev, N.A. Spassky concerned with the Finno-Ugric peoples of the Volga region - Mordva and Mari, written in the XIX - early XX centuries. The author deals with their research findings. The works of these researches are unique, because they represent the views of contemporaries on the history of peoples of that era, they are historical sources.
